The word "nunchaku" is an Okinawan word, a compound of "nun" and "chiku", two wooden rods connected at one end with a short line. This is also the origin of the Chinese term "luo-han chieh", literally meaning "Mainland rod pair". In Chinese, this instrument is most commonly known as 雙節棍 (shuāngjiégùn) which means “double jointed rods”. The instrument derives from two earlier instruments of similar form, the staff (tufa) and the nantō. Nunchucks are a traditional Okinawan martial arts weapon with a long and distinguished history in East Asian cultures.
